Is N26 crypto friendly?

Partly. You can buy and sell crypto inside the app through Bitpanda, but nothing moves in or out, and N26 publishes no rule either way on transfers to outside exchanges.

What N26 allows and blocks

Allowed

  • Buying, selling and swapping crypto inside the N26 app, with Bitpanda executing the orders and holding the coins
  • N26 Crypto for customers in Germany, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal
  • Orders from 1 euro, up to 50,000 euros a day on a personal account and 100,000 euros a day on a business account, with a cap of 200 trades in 24 hours
  • Stop-loss orders, coin-to-coin swaps at a 30 percent fee discount, and recurring investment plans
  • N26 Bank SE holds its own MiCA authorisation for receiving and transmitting crypto orders, passported across the EU
  • Self-employed customers on a business account can use N26 Crypto

Blocked or restricted

  • No transfer of crypto to an external wallet, and no way to receive crypto from outside. The terms say the service does not support any crypto-asset transfer service
  • N26 does not custody anything itself. Bitpanda GmbH in Austria holds the coins in a cold wallet and the customer never sees the private keys
  • Leaving the service means selling first. A termination only takes effect once the coins are sold, and if you do not tell Bitpanda what to do it can sell them and send you the proceeds less costs
  • No business accounts for companies. N26 Business is for self-employed people trading under their own name, so a crypto firm with a GmbH or similar cannot bank here
  • US persons are excluded from N26 Crypto
  • No staking, lending or yield on crypto appears anywhere in N26's crypto documents
  • The Metal fee discount stops after 5,000 euros of order value a month

The Fine Print

  1. N26 is not your crypto provider: it only supplies the in-app window, while Bitpanda executes, holds and custodies everything, each liable only for its own slice.
  2. A closed loop by design: transfers to external wallets, or to you directly, are generally not possible. Buy, hold, sell, that is it.
  3. They can sell you out on exit: leave without selling within the notice period and Bitpanda may sell your assets for you, unless you actively object in time.
  4. Your crypto secures your overdraft: N26 holds a lien over your crypto claims and can sell them to cover what you owe, no court order needed.
  5. Liability capped at EUR 10,000 in most cases, and only the German documents are legally binding, the English version is a courtesy.

Questions about N26

Does N26 let me send money to Kraken or Coinbase?

N26 publishes no rule on it. Its help articles on why accounts get closed or blocked never mention crypto exchanges, and third-party guides describe SEPA deposits from N26 to Kraken and Binance as routine. What N26 does have is a record of automated anti-money-laundering blocks, including more than 100 accounts wrongly closed in April 2022, so large or unusual inbound transfers are the thing to watch.

Can I withdraw crypto from N26 to my own wallet?

No. N26 Crypto is a closed loop. The terms say the service supports no crypto-asset transfer services, so you cannot send coins out to a wallet or another exchange, and you cannot deposit coins from outside. Bitpanda holds everything in a cold wallet on your behalf.

What does N26 charge to buy Bitcoin?

1.5 percent of the order value on Bitcoin and 2.5 percent on other coins, rising to 3.5 percent for thinly traded ones. Metal members pay 1 percent and 2 percent on their first 5,000 euros of orders each month. Bitpanda sets the price shown in the app and may build in a spread.

Can a crypto company open an N26 business account?

No. N26 Business only serves self-employed people trading under their own name, and the company name cannot appear on the account. A crypto exchange, custodian or token issuer set up as a company has to look elsewhere.
