What Bunq allows and blocks

Allowed

  • Buy, sell and swap more than 300 coins inside the bunq app from EUR 1, with Kraken handling trading and custody
  • bunq Crypto is open to verified personal account holders aged 18 or over in 30 EEA countries, from Austria to Sweden, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
  • Flexible staking on 20 coins (ETH, SOL, ADA, DOT, TRX and others) with no lock-up, launched 25 September 2025
  • Auto Round Up can sweep spare change from card payments into a chosen coin, settled to Kraken every Friday
  • Sending euros by SEPA to a crypto exchange account in your own name is not on the prohibited activities list in the personal terms
  • Business accounts for crypto companies authorised as CASPs under MiCAR: a Standard account for operating funds and an Omnibus account for holding client fiat
  • Accepted CASP activities include fiat-to-crypto exchange, crypto-to-crypto exchange, licensed custody wallets, proprietary investing, payments, advisory, portfolio management and crypto funds
  • bunq-as-a-Service, a banking-as-a-service platform on bunq's own licence, open to businesses across the EU since 23 June 2026, with crypto named among the target industries and Dutch Bitcoin platform Blockrise as the anchor partner

Blocked or restricted

  • Coins bought through bunq Crypto cannot be withdrawn to an external wallet, and no inbound crypto deposits are offered
  • bunq Crypto is personal-only: the pricing sheet lists the crypto transaction fee as n/a on every business plan
  • Ordinary business accounts exclude crypto activities other than crypto consultancy, and 'unsupported cryptocurrency activities' is a listed reason for refusal
  • Under the crypto business terms bunq rejects unlicensed fiat-crypto exchanges, mining and mining pools, ICOs and token issuance, and mixers or tumblers
  • Only crypto companies registered with an EU supervisor (AFM for Dutch entities) are onboarded; a business account is refused if any UBO or non-executive lives outside the EEA
  • bunq does not hold, safeguard or custody crypto for business clients; the crypto business account is fiat only
  • Payments the risk engine flags as high-risk can be blocked, and the personal terms list actively trading or investing in unregulated investments as a prohibited use
  • Any crypto still held when an account is terminated is liquidated by bunq
  • No US or UK accounts yet: the OCC denied bunq's US bank charter application on 4 August 2026 (disclosed 7 August), and the UK EMI application is still pending

The Fine Print

  1. Banking for crypto companies, fiat only: bunq never holds or touches crypto itself, your account is the money side of a licensed crypto business.
  2. Licensed players only: MiCAR-authorised CASPs exclusively, and losing the licence is immediate grounds for termination.
  3. Serious fees: EUR 2,499 onboarding, EUR 499 to 4,999 monthly compliance, and the monthly fee is higher when your balance is below EUR 2M, not above.
  4. Movement is supervised: EUR 1M daily payment limit by default, paid limit increases capped at four weeks, and EUR 10M+ moves need a day's notice.
  5. Bad press is a termination ground, liability is capped at 12 months of fees, and mining, ICO issuers and mixers are refused outright.

Regulatory history

2014DNB granted bunq B.V. a banking licence on 17 September 2014; the bank is listed in the DNB public register under relation number R127999 with payment services and e-money issuance from the same date. source
2022On 18 October 2022 the Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal (CBb) ruled in bunq's appeal against DNB: it accepted bunq's technology-led transaction monitoring under the Wwft, while upholding DNB's findings on source-of-funds checks and UBO identification. source
2025DNB fined bunq EUR 2.6 million on 6 May 2025 for AML failings between January 2021 and May 2022 in four customer files; DNB rejected bunq's objection on 14 October 2025 and bunq lodged an appeal on 24 November 2025. source
2026bunq filed a de novo national bank charter application with the OCC on 7 January 2026, its second US attempt after withdrawing a 2023 application. The OCC denied it on 4 August 2026 (disclosed by bunq 7 August), citing supervisory and compliance concerns and a business plan it found unsupported. No penalty was imposed and the decision does not bar a future application. source
2026bunq applied to Mexico's banking regulator CNBV on 13 May 2026 for a full banking licence as an Institución de Banca Múltiple, its first move into Latin America. The application is pending. source

Questions about Bunq

Can I buy crypto in the bunq app?

Yes. bunq Crypto lets verified personal customers aged 18 or over buy, sell and swap more than 300 coins from EUR 1. Kraken runs the trading and holds the coins. The fee depends on your plan: 1.99% on Free down to 0.25% on Elite, plus the spread. It is available in 30 EEA countries but not on business accounts.

Can I withdraw my bunq crypto to my own wallet?

No. Coins bought in the app stay in Kraken custody. You can sell them back to euros in your bunq account or swap them for another coin, but there is no transfer to an external wallet and no way to deposit crypto from outside.

Does bunq let me send money to Kraken or Coinbase?

bunq's personal terms do not name exchanges as a prohibited destination, so a SEPA transfer to an exchange account in your own name is not banned on paper. bunq does block payments its risk engine flags as high-risk, and the terms list active trading in unregulated investments as a prohibited use. Treat large or repeated exchange transfers as something that may be paused for questions.

Does bunq open business accounts for crypto companies?

Only for companies authorised as a CASP under MiCAR and registered with an EU supervisor. The account is fiat only, with a EUR 2,499 onboarding fee and a monthly compliance fee of EUR 499 or EUR 4,999 depending on your average balance. Unlicensed exchanges, miners, token issuers and mixers are refused, and ordinary business plans exclude crypto activity altogether.
